The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!

Harry Truman refused to let the story of Project Zebra become public. He detested Stalin and everything Russian.

But a young U.S. Navy Lieutenant by the name of Gregory Gargarin (second from the left in the picture), thought differently. And, so he kept every photograph, every document, every scrap of history. Thank goodness!

Gregory was right. Project Zebra is the only time in history that America custom-built squadrons of huge two-story warplanes in Philadelphia for the Soviets then secretly trained 300 Soviet flyers in America. The training site, the town of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, kept their little secret until the mission was declassified in 2013.

Project Zebra is an amazing story of mutual trust and accomplishment against all the odds.
